Work out who is billing you
Instant Checkmate can reach your card in more than one place, and only the party that took your money can stop taking it. Check your bank or card statement first — the name, and the amount, tell you which path below to use.
- Directly, through your Instant Checkmate account — the route for most subscribers. The recurring charge is “the recurring fee of $35.47 plus applicable sales tax” every 30 days, or “the recurring fee of $85.13 plus applicable sales tax” every 90 days on the longer plan (Terms of Use). If a charge in that range is the one you don’t recognise, this is the likely source. Cancel with Step 2 below.
- Through Apple, if you subscribed inside the iPhone app — see below. If Apple bills you, Instant Checkmate’s own cancel page cannot stop the charge.
- Through Google Play, if you subscribed inside the Android app — unconfirmed this run; see below.
If Apple bills you
Instant Checkmate publishes an iPhone app, and as of 2 August 2026 its App Store listing shows in-app purchases — which means it can be subscribed to inside the app. If you signed up that way, Apple bills you, not Instant Checkmate, and Instant Checkmate’s cancel page and support line cannot stop it.
Cancel at: iPhone/iPad Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Instant Checkmate → Cancel Subscription. On a Mac: App Store → your name → Account Settings → Subscriptions.
(Method note: the same App Store check, run against a known in-app-purchase app — Crunchyroll — correctly surfaces its subscription products, so a positive reading here reflects a real Apple-billing product rather than a blank listing.)
If Google Play bills you
If you subscribed through the Android app, Google Play may bill you. We could not confirm whether Google Play currently sells an Instant Checkmate subscription — Play listings do not reliably attribute an in-app-purchase price to a specific app — so we flag this as unconfirmed rather than asserting either way. If an Instant Checkmate subscription appears in your Google account: Play Store → profile → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Instant Checkmate → Cancel subscription. Cancel through Instant Checkmate
If Instant Checkmate bills you directly (most subscribers), its help centre lists this path from your logged-in account:
- Log in to your Instant Checkmate account.
- Open Membership Settings. In their words: “Navigate to “Membership Settings” via the “Account” tab on the top right hand corner of your dashboard screen”.
- Cancel the subscription: “Click “Cancel Subscription” at the bottom of the active subscription you would like to cancel”.
- Enter the requested information and click Submit.
Submitting is not an instant switch-off. Instant Checkmate’s page says the request “will be sent to a member of our customer support team”, who then cancels the account. You do not have to call or chat — the online form completes it — but keep the confirmation in case the charge recurs.

Prefer the phone? It is offered, not required. Instant Checkmate’s terms: “You can cancel online anytime by logging in to your account or calling (800) 222-8985”, with phone hours of 7am–4pm PT, Monday–Friday. The online path above is enough on its own.
Confirm, and know what you keep
Keep the cancellation confirmation. You keep access until the end of the billing cycle you have already paid for — Instant Checkmate does not cut you off early, and it does not refund the remainder. A charge you have already paid is not reversed by cancelling; cancelling stops the next one.
What Instant Checkmate’s terms say
No refund for the rest of the cycle; access runs to the end of it. Instant Checkmate’s refunds page states that if you cancel during the cycle, “you will not receive a refund (with few exceptions)” and that “your Instant Checkmate services will continue through the end of current billing cycle”. The “few exceptions” it describes are billing errors or fraud, not a general change-of-mind refund.

It renews automatically until you cancel. Terms of Use §11: “Your membership will automatically renew every 30 days unless you cancel before the start of the next term”. There is no advance-notice window to miss beyond cancelling before your renewal date — no 24- or 48-hour rule.

Has Instant Checkmate made cancelling harder over time? No.
We compared its cancellation page across the Internet Archive. In the 7 May 2022 capture and the 2 January 2026 capture, the same online path appears — “Cancel Online: log in, open Membership Settings, click Cancel Subscription.” No cancellation step was removed and no new gate was added. The one change is an addition: a “Cancel by Phone” option that was not in the 2022 capture now sits alongside the online path as an alternative, not a replacement. The online exit has been stable.
What customers report
One complaint component is now scored: of the 500 most recent App Store reviews (3 August 2026), 11.5% mention billing, charges, refunds or cancellation — the 68th percentile of our corpus, and the input that moved this grade from “Easy” to “Minor friction”. The second complaint measure is scored as well: 147 complaints closed with the BBB in three years — the 69th percentile of our corpus.
We say so plainly because it matters most here. People-search memberships are one of the most-complained-about corners of the subscription economy, and both of Instant Checkmate’s complaint measures now sit in the upper third of our corpus. If a people-search charge caught you by surprise, you are far from the only one.
A note on the rules
We have not formally scored Instant Checkmate against California’s automatic-renewal law (Bus & Prof Code §17600 et seq.) — it is one of the four unscored components above, and a compliance judgment we leave to a reviewer. What is plainly observable from the company’s own documents is narrow: the terms disclose the automatic renewal in their own text (the membership “will automatically renew every 30 days”), and an online cancellation path exists. We are not issuing a legal finding in either direction.

Is Instant Checkmate hard to cancel?
Mechanically, no: you can cancel online from your account in three steps — log in, open Membership Settings, click Cancel Subscription — with no required phone call. The “Minor friction” grade reflects its above-median share of billing complaints in recent app reviews, not a harder exit. The harder part is usually noticing the charge and working out which company is billing you.
Does this score mean OnCancel recommends Instant Checkmate?
No. The score rates only the cancellation mechanics and the complaint share. It does not rate the product, the marketing, or the billing practices, and three of the ten scoring components — including BBB volume and auto-renewal-law compliance — are unscored here.
I cancelled but I’m still being charged. Why?
Most often because a different company is billing you. If you subscribed inside the iPhone app, Apple bills you and you must cancel in iOS Settings; a website cancellation will not stop an Apple charge. Check the statement for who took the money.
Will I get a refund for the rest of the cycle?
No. Instant Checkmate’s refunds page says you will not receive a refund (with few exceptions), and access continues to the end of the current billing cycle.
Do I have to call anyone?
No. Phone cancellation at (800) 222-8985 is offered as an option, but the online path completes the cancellation on its own.
